LONDON – British Energy Minister Charles Hendry has awarded 46 new licenses to explore for hydrocarbons in the North Sea.

These awards were part of the UK’s 26th offshore oil and gas licensing round, originally announced in October 2010.

Although 144 licenses were issued, a number of blocks were held back pending further assessment on Special Areas of Conservation (SACs) and Special Protection Areas (SPAs).

Hendry said: “These further licenses have been subject to rigorous examination, and we are now satisfied that initial exploration can go ahead.
