BUENOS AIRES, Argentina – The governments of the UK and Argentina have agreed to improve relations through closer cooperation on areas of mutual interest.
This follows a visit to Buenos Aires by Sir Alan Duncan - the first Foreign Office Minister to visit Argentina since 2009.
Both countries agreed the first positive statement on the South Atlantic since 1999, committing to work together on issues affecting the South Atlantic and theFalkland Islands.
This includes working toward removing restrictive measures around the oil and gas industry in the Falkland Islands in the coming months.
One of the agreed initiatives is to free the Falkland Islands to set up flight connections with other countries in the region. A monthly stopover in Argentina will provide a further arrangement similar to that which exists already.
Duncan stressed that the UK government continues to strongly support the rights of the Falkland Islanders and that its position on sovereignty has not changed - there can be no dialogue on this unless the Falkland Islanders so wish.
Argos Resources, the sole Falkland Islands-based E&P company with a 5% overriding royalty interest in license PL001 in theNorth Falkland basin, says the Falklands administration has approved a three-year extension of the license’s second phase to November 2019.
Thereafter, a third license phase of 10 years is available to theNoble Energy-led group.
