KENNER, Louisiana – The relief well drilling to intercept the Macondo annulus is within 24 hours of making that connection, says Coast Guard Admiral Thad Allen, the national incident commander. After that connection to the annulus, and depending upon what is found, the well should be killed with 96 hours.

The Development Driller IIIis within 20 ft of reaching the annular space of the Macondo well, and, depending upon whether added ranging runs are necessary, could be in the annulus in less than 24 hours.

Upon intercept of the annulus, the decision on exactly how to proceed to kill the well will be made. The final method depends on what is found in the annulus; what pressure, what fluids, etc. In any case, Allen says whatever the choice of kill method selected, it should be completed with 96 hours, if not less.

Some demobilization of equipment at the well site is under way already, Allen added.
