LONDON -- Salamander Energy has agreed to acquire a 50% interest in and operatorship of block 101-100/04 offshore northern Vietnam. The current license owners are Santos Vietnam and Singapore Petroleum Vietnam Song Hong.

The block, in the Hanoi Trough which Salamander CEO James Menzies says is an under-explored basin, is part of a play system that extends east to the Beibu Wan fields.

Salamander says a well on the Cat Ba oil prospect will be drilled in 2011, and a further three drillable prospects have been identified on the license. The company has offered the existing partners an option to retain their 50% share of the license on completion of the Cat Ba well.
