LONDON – Lloyd’s Register (LR) is leading a safety study assessment for the second phase of the Equinor-operated Peregrino oil field development in the Campos basin offshore Brazil.

The program involves the addition of athird wellhead platform (WH-C) at a probable cost of $3.5 billion, helping to recover 273 MMbbl, with production due to begin by the end of 2020.

Joar Dalheim, LR’s project manager, said: “Our work with Equinor will help ensure there are efficient barriers against fatalities, environmental spills and financial losses.”

Peregrino is a heavy oil field 85 km (53 mi) off the coast of Rio de Janeiro in water depths of around 100 m (328 ft).

To date it has been developed with an FPSO and two wellhead platforms (WHP-A and WHP-B), and is Equinor’s largest operated oil field outside Norway with a production capacity of 100,000 b/d.

The concession for the field runs through 2040.
