OSLO, Norway — COSCO Heavy Industries has ordered a compressed air system for a jackup offshore wind foundation installation vessel, which the shipbuilder is constructing for Cadeler.

TMC Compressors will provide the equipment, which will be based on Smart Air compressors, said to provide an energy saving of up to 40% compared to conventional compressors. The system will comprise control and service air compressors.

Hans Petter Tanum, TMC's director of sales and business development, said, “This is a large vessel, which requires a large capacity marine compressed air system. Consequently, the more energy efficient the system is, the proportionate cost savings become even greater.”

The company’s Smart Air compressors employ a frequency-controlled technology said to result in precise control of the compressor speed. The speed of the electrical motor will adjust according to what is needed to produce the air volume to ensure compressed air consumption at all times.

Lower air consumption requires less speed on the compressor, resulting in turn reduced power consumption.

Cadeler’s F-class vessel is designed to switch from installation of large foundations to installation of wind turbine generators within a short period.

TMC will manufacture and assemble its equipment in Europe for shipment to COSCO’s shipyard in Qidong, China.
