OSLO Norway — TGS has started a multiclient wind measurement campaign in the German North Sea using two LiDAR buoys.
Both are equipped with sensors to perform measurements of wind, metocean and environmental data, which will be streamed to shore for analysis purposes for current and future wind lease rounds in the German Bight.
Under TGS’ approach, multiple customers can subscribe to the same floating LiDAR data, which the company claims can help offshore wind developers reduce project costs and timelines. It operates similar programs off the US’ east coast, where five buoys are currently collecting data, and offshore Norway.
Here, data availability is said to have averaged 96% at 160 m measurement height throughout the deployment.
Green Rebel is supplying the buoys for the 24-month German North Sea measurement campaign.
In addition to wind speed measurements, the resulting package will include 12 months of metocean data covering significant wave heights and ocean current profiles, acquired via directional Waverider buoys and seabed-mounted acoustic doppler current profilers.
The data will be continuously streamed and made available to clients each day via TGS’ Wind AXIOM site evaluation/wind data analytics service. This is said to help developers and others limit the main factors affecting the viability of offshore wind projects.
