EDINBURGH, UK — Flotation Energy and Vårgrønn, the joint venture between Plenitude (Eni) and HitecVision, have secured offshore planning approval for their Green Volt floating offshore wind development off the coast of Peterhead, eastern Scotland.

Following the onshore consent earlier this month, the project now has all necessary planning approvals and should be operational in 2029.

Once completed, it will comprise up to 35 floating wind turbines providing up to 560 MW of power.

Green Volt, part of Crown Estate Scotland’s Innovation and Targeted Oil & Gas (INTOG) leasing round, will supply power to oil and gas platforms in the central UK North Sea, replacing existing natural gas and diesel power generation.

It will also export electricity to the UK grid and should reduce carbon emissions by 1 MM metric tons annually, the developers claim.

The Flotation Energy team members were previously involved in the electrification of the Beatrice oil platform in the Moray Firth in 1999, still the sole fully electrified oil and gas facility in the UK North Sea.

The Beatrice Demonstrator project that followed in 2005-2006 included integration of two wind turbines into the Beatrice platform’s electrical system.
