LYNGBY, Denmark  Maersk Supply Service and GustoMSC will co-design a new offshore wind installation vessel tailored to the growing market in Europe.

This will build on the characteristics of a current concept developed for operations in US waters.

The new design will allow the jackup vessel to remain on location at the wind farm while tugs and barges sail to port and back to transport the wind turbine tower, nacelle and blades.

According to Maersk Supply Service, the arrangement could be more than 30% more efficient than for conventional jackup vessels and also less weather-dependent, allowing for continuous installations year-round.

These features would help reduce the levelized costs of energy from offshore wind, the company added. Work on the new design should finish later this year.
