BRONDBY, Denmark  NKT will supply an HVDC offshore export/onshore power cable system to Ørsted for the Hornsea 3 wind farm development, 160 km offshore Yorkshire, eastern England.

Estimated value of the order is about Eur500 million ($543 million).

NKT’s work scope covers design, manufacture, jointing and termination of the export power cable system, including two circuits with a route length of 170 km of 320-kV DC offshore cable, the 50-km 320-kV DC onshore cable and four circuits for a 1.5-km route of 40-kV AC onshore cable.

The DC system will connect the wind turbines with the substation, and the AC cables will connect the latter to the UK’s grid.

Last spring the company completed the power cable system for Hornsea 2.

When Hornsea 3 comes online, the combined capacity of Hornsea 1, 2 and 3 will be more than 5 GW.

NKT will produce the power cables at its high-voltage factory in Karlskrona, Sweden. Subject to FID on Hornsea 3, it will aim to complete the project in 2027.
