LONDON — bp and Deep Wind Offshore will jointly pursue offshore wind opportunities in South Korea.
Under the agreement, bp has acquired a 55% stake in Deep Wind Offshore’s early-stage offshore wind portfolio, which includes four local projects with a potential generating capacity of up to 6 GW: Abalone, Admiral Lee, Rising Sun and Western Wind.
According to bp, South Korea aims to source 22% of its energy needs from renewable sources by 2030.
The joint venture will work using Deep Wind Offshore’s team in four offices around the country. The company’s owner, Knutsen Group, is a regular client of local shipbuilding yards.
The permitting process has started for the four projects with wind measurement devices in place and plans to add/secure further wind measurement systems and electricity business license.
Rising sun is located on the east coast of South Korea, with water depts suitable for floating turbine foundations. Western Wind is located on the west coast of Korea, in medium water depths that could be suitable for either bottom-fixed of floating turbine foundations. Admiral Lee is located in the south coast of South Korea and, according to Deep Wind, offers good wind resources and shallow-water conditions. Abalone wind farm is located in the southwest of South Korea, and combined with reasonably shallow water depths, it is suitable for both bottom-fixed and floating foundations.
In Norway, Deep Wind is developing bids for the country’s Utsira Nord and Sørlige Nordsjø II offshore wind projects with EDF Renewables.
