LONDON  Britain’s North Sea Transition Authority (NSTA) has awarded Centrica Offshore UK a gas storage license for the Rough Field, 29 km (18 miles) off the Yorkshire coast in the southern North Sea.

Centrica can now pursue seeking the further regulatory approvals required before gas storage operations can commence, including further approvals required from the NSTA.

The company used to store gas in the Rough gas field, which it developed via two platforms, before shutting the field down in 2017 due to running costs.

It was the UK’s largest gas storage facility in the UK, with a capacity for holding about 100 Bcf of stored gas and a deliverability rate of 1.5 Bcf/d.

According to the UK’s Daily Telegraph, there are hopes the facility could be reopened as soon as the fall, although ministers remain in talks with Centrica about potential possible financial support for the reopening process.

The government has acted in an attempt to shore up the UK’s gas supplies as winter approaches.
