Subsea Integration Alliance (SIA) partners OneSubsea and Subsea7 recently signed a contract with Equinor for the development of a concept study for Phase 2 of the Bacalhau project, according to OneSubsea’s LinkedIn page.

The contract, for which the details have not been disclosed, was said to have been awarded following a competitive process.

The work will be carried out by teams from Subsea7’s UK offices and SLB OneSubsea in Norway, with support from Brazil.

“This [contract] is the result of a collaborative, integrated effort by SIA’s partners reflecting all the experience we have gained throughout Bacalhau Phase 1,” said Olivier Blaringhem, Chief Executive Officer of Subsea Integration Alliance.

Equinor made the final investment decision for phase one of the $8-billion Bacalhau project in June 2021. The FPSO design selected for that project marked the first use of MODEC’s M350 hull, a next-generation newbuild hull for FPSOs.

With the first oil from Phase 1 anticipated in 2025, the FPSO Bacalhau arrived at its destination in the Santos Basin on February 21, 2025.

The Bacalhau field is located in the Santos Basin in two licenses – BM-S-8 and Norte de Carcará – considered to be ultra-deep waters, with a water depth of approximately 2,050 meters (6,725 feet), according to Equinor. The field is located about 185 km (115 miles) off the coast of São Paulo, Brazil.
