SANDNES, Norway  Vår Energi and license partner Equinor have approved concept selection (DG2) for gas export from the Goliat Field in the Barents Sea.

The gas will head through the subsea pipeline currently serving the Snøhvitand satellite fields for further transport to the Hammerfest LNG complex on Melkoya Island, northern Norway, 80 km southeast of Goliat. The partners are now maturing the project toward a final investment decision (FID), probably in the second half 2024.

Since Goliat began producing oil in 2016, the gas has been re-injected into the reservoir. Evacuation of gas from the reservoir is now needed, Vår Energi said, to ensure optimal oil production in the future, thereby extending the field’s lifetime.

The Goliat gas project is also part of an area-wide solution for increasing gas export capacity from the Barents Sea, which Norwegian trunklines operator Gassco is currently assessing.

This will likely mean additional gas infrastructure with capacity to develop both existing and future discoveries.

Goliat can also serve as a tieback hub for oil and gas resources from discoveries and prospects in the area nearby.
