OSLO -- The self-propelled rig Sevan Driller has completed sea trials off the coast of China and has started its voyage to Brazil to begin a six-year contract with Petrobras.
The rig has an expected transit time of 75-80 days including bunkering in Singapore and a crew change in Cape Town, South Africa.
Sevan Driller will be operating in the pre-salt area offshore Brazil, starting in the Campos basin in a water depth of 1,800 m (5,906 ft). The rig is capable of drilling in water depths down to 3,000 m (9,843 ft) and has a variable deck load capacity of more than 15,000 metric tons (16,535 tons).
The rig was constructed in less than 30 months at COSCOs Nantong and Qidong shipyards in China and is the world’s first cylindrical drilling unit.
