Spirit hires Shearwater for Morecambe Bay carbon storage survey

Spirit Energy has contracted Shearwater Geoservices to acquire and process a 3D seismic survey over the Morecambe Bay gas fields in the East Irish Sea.

Spirit Energy has reached a major milestone for its Morecambe Net Zero project with the securing of a seismic survey vessel to undertake a scope of work in the East Irish Sea.

BARROW-IN-FURNESS, UK — Spirit Energy has contracted Shearwater Geoservices to acquire and process a 3D seismic survey over the Morecambe Bay gas fields in the East Irish Sea.

The 500 sq km of high-resolution data will support detailed characterization of the subsurface and, with existing data, should provide confirmation of the potential for CO₂ storage that Spirit has identified in the fields. The company recently secured a carbon storage license for the development from the North Sea Transition Authority.

It will be Shearwater’s fifth carbon capture and storage license in the past two years, with the six-week shoot taking place this summer.
