New casing retrieval tool lowers cost of deepwater P&A operations

During the next eight years, both the North Sea and the Gulf of Mexico are expected to see significant numbers of P&A projects. Integrated approaches with contingencies to handle the unknowns associated with these operations will be critical to the safety, efficiency, and economics of these projects. A new casing retrieval technology has been developed to specifically address deepwater P&A needs. The Harpoon cut-and-pull spear is designed to increase the likelihood of retrieving the casing in each run by performing multiple recovery attempts in a single trip.

First modular drilling rig designed for North Sea P&A operations

Archer's modular rig is designed for swift assembly on most offshore platforms, typically over a period of up to three weeks, using the platform's cranes. Once assembled, the rig can undertake most standard tasks ranging from top hole to cased hole drilling, managed pressure drilling, through tubing rotary drilling, coiled tubing/e-line/slickline intervention, and P&A workover. However, it is lighter and more compact than existing modular or platform rig options, according to the company, and therefore easier to accommodate on the space-constrained decks of most of the older North Sea installations.
