M-I Swaco announces drilling technology advancements

Offshore staff

STAVANGER, Norway – M-I Swaco announced today at the Offshore Northern Seas (ONS) conference and exhibition the development of a new mud skip. The SafeSkip is designed with a lower height to be operated by one person from ground level, said M-I Swaco.

The new design also can be loaded two high on trucks for moving.

M-I Swaco also has announced a radio frequency identification (RFID) activated circulating valve for drilling and pre-completion wellbore cleaning. The IntelliForce CCV opens and closes by sending a RFID activation tag into the well fluid and pumping it through the tool. Each tag is programmed to open or close ports on a specific tool.

The IntelliForce CCV tool holds a power source, electro-hydraulic system, and sliding sleeve. The RFID tag causes the hydraulic system to move the sleeve to open or close circulating ports.

This development follows a licensing agreement between M-I Swaco and iiiTech. The original use of RFID to activate downhole equipment was developed by Marathon Oil Co. and licensed to iiiTech.
