Salamander spuds Philippine well

Offshore staff

LONDON -- The Salamander Energy Plc exploration well, Lumba Lumba-1 was spudded on July 19, 2008 in permit SC41, in the Sandakan Basin, offshore northeast Borneo, Philippines.

The semisubmersible Transocean Legend is drilling Lumba Lumba-1 to a planned depth of 3,000 m (9,842 ft) subsea in 1,100 m (3,609 ft) of water.

The exploration well targets multiple stacked objectives in an inversion structure. A resource potential of about 200 MMboe is estimated for the structure. Reservoir sandstone development is a key technical risk.

A 760-sq km 3D seismic survey was acquired in 2007 in SC41 and a variety of structural and stratigraphic prospects resulted. The Lumba Lumba structure is on trend from the Wildebeest-1 well, which was drilled in 2000 by a previous operator and recovered 38° API oil.

As well as testing the potential of this structure, the Lumba Lumba well stratigraphic information will help define the further prospects in the acreage.

Salamander holds a 35% interest in SC41.
