Shell outlines deepwater plans offshore Nigeria

SNEPCo (Shell Nigeria) plans to prolong the life of the Bonga FPSO offshore Nigeria by a further 15 years, under the Bonga Main Life Extension project.

ABUJA, Nigeria — SNEPCo (Shell Nigeria) plans to prolong the life of the Bonga FPSO offshore Nigeria by a further 15 years, under the Bonga Main Life Extension project.

The facility started operating in November 2005, and it was the country’s first deepwater development at the time.

In 2023 the Bonga Field produced its one-billionth barrel of oil and SNEPCo has sought to bring in additional volumes from other offshore fields, with more set to go onstream in 2024 and beyond.

Other opportunities in deepwater include the Bonga North, Bonga South-West and Nnwa Doro projects on which SNEPCo is collaborating with its partners and the Nigerian government.

SNEPCo is producing oil from the Bonga North West Field, which lies at a depth of more than 1,000 m (3,300 ft).

In addition, both SNEPCo and the Shell Petroleum Development Co. of Nigeria Ltd. (SPDC) are maturing several projects to deliver gas from their deepwater and onshore fields.

“Shell is committed to developing its robust portfolio in Nigeria,” said Elohor Ainoni, managing director of SNEPCo, during a panel discussion at the 8th Sub-Saharan Africa International Petroleum Exhibition and Conference (SAIPEC), organized by the Petroleum Technology Association of Nigeria. “We are maturing numerous projects planned to come onstream in the short, medium and long terms with the right fiscal and regulatory framework.”
