LONDONHansa Hydrocarbons has received operatorship of five contiguous licenses in the Dutch and German sectors of the North Sea.

These are for blocks N04, N05, N07c, and N08 in the Dutch sector and the Geldsackplate license offshore Germany, collectively known as the GEms (Gateway to the Ems) acreage. Dutch state utility EBN is a 40% partner in the N blocks.

All are around 20 km (12 mi) north and northeast of the Dutch island of Schiermonnikoog and cover a gross area of around 814 sq km (314 sq mi), in water depths ranging from 10-30 m (33-98 ft). North of the acreage are the4Quads and H&L licenses (Hansa 60% and 20%).

The exploration targets are a continuation of the basal Rotliegend play proven to the north in the offshore H&L (Hansa 20%) and 4Quads licenses (Hansa 60%). The area is extensively covered by 3D seismic acquired in the mid-1990s although no wells have been drilled on the permits based on the results.

Hansa’s studies of existing well data have led to reservoir sands being mapped directly on 3D seismic over extensive structural closures, which the company says could hold significant resources.

The company is currently reprocessing the 3D seismic to enhance imaging.

John Martin, Hansa Hydrocarbon’s CEO, said: “With processing of thelarge 4Quads 3D seismic survey acquired in 2014 due to be complete in the coming months and the re-processing of the existing 3D seismic across the GEms acreage, there is some real momentum building up in pursuit of this multi-tcf conventional gas play which will lead to exploration drilling within the next 18 months.”
