CAMBRIDGE, UK – London South Bank University and TWI will collaborate to develop autonomous robotic systems capable of venturing into environments too hazardous for manned operations.
The two institutions are targeting continuous non-destructive testing inspection of safety-critical structures in a variety of industries, including offshore oil and gas platforms. Much of this work currently has to be performed manually.
Studies have also shown that manual inspection can miss major defects in safety-critical structures due to human error, TWI says.
The London South Bank Innovation Centre (LSBIC) for Automation of NDT will operate from TWI’s newly constructed 25,000-sq m (269,098-sq ft) facilities in Cambridge.
TWI, one of Europe’s largest R&D organizations, has 700 industrial member companies. The new center will house 14 researchers and eight TWI-funded PhDs, with developments to be led by industry.
