USCG continues to monitor GoM platform following fire

The US Coast Guard continues to monitor a platform near Breton Island after an on board fire was suppressed Saturday, May 23.

NEW ORLEANS –The US Coast Guard continues to monitor a platform near Breton Island after an on board fire was suppressed Saturday, May 23.

Responding crews have boarded the platform and extinguished the flame. Clean up and repairs are under way.

A rainbow sheen is reportedly dissipating and moving away from the Breton Island Wildlife Refuge. Spill response equipment and personnel, including boom and skimmers, are on scene as a precaution to help protect the wildlife refuge.

There was no shoreline impact or injury to wildlife reported by the Coast Guard.

The offshore supply vesselMiss Katherine reported the fire on an oil production platform in Breton Sound block 21. All 28 people on the platform were evacuated to the supply vessel and were taken to Venice, Louisiana. No injuries were reported.

The well was shut in and production has ceased.

The cause of the incident is under investigation.
