LISBON, Portugal — Galp Energia says a second well on the Carcará discovery in the presaltSantos basin offshore Brazil has encountered light oil.
Well 3-SPS-105, informally known as Carcará North, was drilled 4.6 km (2.9 mi) north of the discovery well in block BM-S-8 in 2,072 m of water, around 229 km offshore the São Paulo state coast.
To date, the well has intersected a 358-m (1,174-ft) column of 31°API oil in good-quality, interconnected carbonate reservoirs below the salt layer at a depth of 5,820 m (19,094 ft). Pressure data have confirmed that it is the same accumulation as of the discovery well.
OperatorPetrobras plans a drill stem test after drilling is concluded to assess the reservoirs’ productivity. Later this year, the partners expect to resume drilling of the Carcará Northwest well according to the Evaluation Plan for the Carcará discovery.
This program, approved by Brazil’s National Petroleum, Natural Gas, and Biofuels Agency (ANP), is due to finish by March 2018.
Galp has a 14% stake in the concession via its subsidiary Petrogal Brasil. The other partners are Barra Energia do Brasil Petróleo e Gás and Queiroz Galvão Exploração e Produção.
