OSLO, NorwayWintershall is completing a wildcat well in the Norwegian Sea as a minor oil discovery.

The semisubmersibleTransocean Arctic drilled well 6406/2-8 in 262 m (859 ft) of water, 20 km (12.4 mi) south of the Statoil-operated Kristin field.

According to the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate (NPD), it encountered two oil columns over a 130-m (426-ft) interval in the Båt and Fangst groups in generally poor-quality sandstone reservoir quality.

Early estimates suggest 1-8 MMboe recoverable.

This was the first well on production license 589, awarded in the APA 2010 licensing round.Transocean Arctic will next drill another wildcat for Wintershall, well 35/12-5 S, in PL 378 in the North Sea.

The location of the program is around 80 km (49.7 mi) southwest of Florø.
