US EIA lists top oil and gas fields ranked by reserves

A supplement to the US Energy Information Administration’s (EIA) U.S. Crude Oil and Natural Gas Proved Reserves, 2013 ranks the 100 largest US oil and gas fields, combining offshore and onshore by their estimated 2013 proved reserves.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – A supplement to the US Energy Information Administration’s (EIA) U.S. Crude Oil and Natural Gas Proved Reserves, 2013ranks the 100 largest US oil and gas fields, combining offshore and onshore by their estimated 2013 proved reserves.

The Top 100 oil fields as of Dec. 31, 2013, accounted for 20.6 Bbbl of crude oil and lease condensate proved reserves, which was 56% of the US total (36.5 Bbbl) in 2013. The Top 100 gas fields as of Dec. 31, 2013, accounted for 239.7 tcf of total natural gas proved reserves, about 68% of the US total natural gas proved reserves in 2013.

In 2009, the United States had 22.3 Bbbl of crude oil and lease condensate proved reserves, and its Top 100 oil fields had 62.3% of that total, or 13.9 Bbbl of proved reserves. In 2013, the United States had 36.5 Bbbl of crude oil and lease condensate proved reserves, and its Top 100 US oil fields had 56.4% of that total, or 20.6 Bbbl of proved reserves.

In 2009, the United States had 283.9 tcf of total natural gas proved reserves, and its Top 100 gas fields had 60.8% of that total, or 172.7 tcf of proved reserves. In 2013, the United States had 354.0 tcf of total natural gas proved reserves, and its Top 100 US gas fields had 67.7% of the total, or 239.7 bcf of proved reserves.

The offshore oil fields in the Top 100 are as follows: 3. Prudhoe Bay; 7. Thunder Horse; 10. Atlantis; 11. Mars; 12. Mad Dog; 20. Ursa; 23. St Malo; 24. Shenzi; 27. Tahiti; 35. Stones; 36. Hondo; 43. Great White; 52. Big Foot; 56. Who Dat; 62. Heidelberg; 63. Julia; 73. Nakika-Keple; 74. Sacate; 75 .K2; 82. Auger; 88. Caesar-Tonga; 97. King – Horn Mt; and 99. Chinook. All are in theGulf of Mexico except Prudhoe Bay which is off Alaska, and Hondo and Sacate which are offshore in the Pacific.

The offshore gas fields in the Top 100 are as follows: 39. Lower Mobile Bay Alabama and Federal; 80. Ursa; 82. Mars; 89. Hadrian South; and 100, Great White. All are in theGulf of Mexico.

The top three US gas reserves are shale plays, namely Marcellus, Barnett, and Fayetteville. The three leading oil plays are Eagle Ford, Spraberry, and Prudhoe Bay.
