ABERDEEN, UK – Training group OPITO has opened a new office in Cyprus, from where it will help Cyprus develop and explore its offshore hydrocarbon resources.

TheEastern Mediterranean could hold 122 tcf of gas, and with additional exploration likely offshore neighboring countries such as Israel, Lebanon and Egypt, Cyprus could emerge as an oil and gas hub for the region, OPITO claims.

It plans to roll out many of the skills initiatives and tools that it has developed in the UK, working with education, government, and academia in Cyprus to generate awareness of the opportunities in the oil and gas sector; ensuring university education is aligned with specific job roles in oil and gas; and providing training to transfer existing skills among Cypriots to those needed for oil and gas activity.

Chris Wright, who formerly worked for OPITO in Dubai, is heading the Cyprus office and will be responsible for building a safety training infrastructure.

Two Cypriot nationals will also be employed in the office.
