OSLO, Norway – Statoil has found oil with its latest wildcat in the Oseberg area of the Norwegian North Sea, according to the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate (NPD).
The semisubmersibleTransocean Leader drilled well 30/11-10 on production license PL 035 in 105 m (344 ft) of water, just north of the 2011 30/11-8 S gas/oil/condensate discovery, and 25 km (16 mi) southwest of the Oseberg South field.
The well encountered mobile oil in the mid-Jurassic Ness formation in good quality reservoir rocks. Early estimates suggest a small find with 1-3 MMboe recoverable. The licensees will evaluate the result discovery in connection with development of other discoveries in the license.
NPD has authorized Wintershall Norge to drill an exploratory well 20 km (12.4 mi) south of the Kristin field in the Norwegian Sea, using the semisubmersibleTransocean Arctic.
This will be the first well on PL 589, which was awarded in February 2011.
