HONNINGSVÅG, Norway – Oil spill management specialist Aptomar and partner Transas have developed what they claim is the world’s most advanced oil spill combat simulator, in cooperation with the North Cape Maritime Training Center in northern Norway.
The North Cape simulator center has been upgraded to allow offshore and onshore personnel to train and exercise on remote sensing, vessel and equipment maneuvering, and sea-air-land tactical collaboration and management.
“By training in this environment, where situations and scenarios can be played and re-played, more oil can be combated, faster, and at a lower cost, during a real oil spill situation,” said Lars Solberg, Apromar’s founder.
The upgrade has received support from Eni Norge, Statoil, Gdf Suez E&P Norge and OMV Norge, all active in theBarents Sea, and the Norwegian Coastal Administration, while Rutter and Miros have supplied oil spill detection systems for the simulator center.
The spill combat simulator technology is designed to facilitate communication and collaboration between onshore/offshore resources, detection and measurement of oil spills, selection and application of different combat methods, and navigation of vessels.
Aptomar’s tactical collaboration and management system (TCMS) is integrated with the simulator, which can also connect the vessel simulator bridges to TCMS’ operation rooms worldwide, in order to train for second line response and operation management.
The center and its training programs will be qualified according to DNV GL’s SeaSkill certification.
