HOUSTONMacGregor, part of Cargotec, has won new contracts with China-based Sinopacific Shipbuilding Group and with Thailand-based Mermaid Maritime Public Co. Ltd.

MacGregor has signed a series of deck machinery orders with Sinopacific Shipbuilding Group for 12 vessels. These orders are for two vessel types, anchor handling tug supply (AHTS) vessels and platform supply vessels (PSVs). They include MacGregor anchor handling/towing winches, shark jaws, towing pins, and other deck machinery. Equipment deliveries will begin between January and October 2015.

The specific vessels are as follows:

  • Three PSVs being built to an SPP17A design for Mexican shipping company, Naviera Petrolera Integral SA de CV. They will be used byPEMEX in the Gulf of Mexico.
  • Four AHTS vessels being built to an SPA60 design for Singaporean company Vallianz Holdings Ltd., for service in the Middle East, Latin America, and Asia Pacific. Each shipset will include a 150-metric ton (165-ton) line pull MacGregor anchor handling/towing winch, 200-metric ton (220-ton) shark jaws and towing pins, and other deck machinery.
  • Two PSVs being built to an SPP35M design for Shenzhen Huawei Offshore Shipping Transport Co. Ltd., a subsidiary of Shanghai Salvage Co. in China
  • Three AHTS vessels being built to an SPA85L design for Shenzhen Huawei Offshore Shipping Transport. Like the two PSVs, these vessels are intended for operation in the South China Sea. Each will be fitted with a 150-metric ton (165-ton) line pull MacGregor anchor handling/towing winch, 250-metric ton (276-ton) shark jaws and towing pins, and other deck machinery.

All four ship designs ordered are customized versions of Sinopacific's existing offshore support vessel designs – e.g., the main dimensions of SPA85L have been optimized to meet the complex conditions of the South China Seas, and the deck areas have been increased on other designs to focus on the “supply” aspect of the vessels.

MacGregor has also announced that the company will see electrically driven versions of its mooring systems fitted to two new tender assist drilling rigs for Mermaid Maritime Public Co. Ltd. The self-erected drilling tenders are under construction at China Merchants Heavy Industry (Jiangsu) Co. Ltd., with delivery planned for 2016.

MacGregor will provide each rig with an electrically driven eight-point mooring system with a 95-metric ton (105-ton) line pull, a 460-metric ton (507-ton) brake holding capacity, and a 1,400-m x 64-mm (4,593-ft x 2.5 in.) diameter wire drum capacity. MacGregor equipment deliveries are scheduled for June 2015.

"The electric winches have variable frequency drives, which consume around 20–30% less energy when compared to hydraulically driven winches," notes Francis Wong, vice president of segment sales for MacGregor Offshore. "This advantage will significantly reduce the carbon footprint and bring down the initial installation and operation cost.
