OSLO, Norway – Petroleum Safety Authority Norway has sanctioned use of the jackup Mærsk Giant as living quarters on the Yme field in the southeastern Norwegian North Sea.
Statoil developed the field in 1995, with production lasting from 1996 to 2001. The field is in 77-93 m (252-305 ft) of water.
In 2006, Talisman Energy Norge was appointed operator of surrounding production license 316/316B. Talisman opted to resurrect production via a newbuild mobile offshore production unit, which was installed and located on an oil storage tank on the seabed.
However, following discovery of serious structural defects in summer 2012, Talisman decided tode-man the facility, and it will be removed from the field next summer.
The consent covers use of theMærsk Giant as living accommodation during preparations for removal. Activities are expected to last about four to five months.
