TRONDHEIM, Norway – Det norske oljeselskap says its exploration well on the Heimdalshø prospect in the Norwegian North Sea was a dry hole.
The well, drilled around 30 km (18.6 mi) east of the BP-operatedValhall field, was the first well to test a new play concept in the Mandal High area, where Johan Sverdrup and the Utsira High is the analogue.
The aim had been to prove petroleum in Upper Jurassic reservoir rocks and to encounter sandstones with hydrocarbons in pre-Jurassic rocks. However, the well only intersected a few thin sandstones with reservoir quality, with no traces of hydrocarbons.
The jackupMaersk Giant drilled the well in 65 m (213 ft) of water. After P&A’ing the well the rig will head to the Talisman-operated Yme field.
