TRONDHEIM, Norway – Aptomar will provide its SECurus oil spill detection and combat technology to a vessel operating off the Norwegian Svalbard archipelago in the Arctic Ocean.
The equipment will be deployed from Icelandic offshore service company Fafnir Offshore’sPolarsyssel vessel, which was recently delivered from Havyard Ship Technology’s yard in Leirvik, Norway.
Fafnir has a contract for the vessel to operate six months per year over the next six years from the governor of Svalbard, which is midway between Norway and the North Pole.
SECurus combines stabilized long-range infrared, digital video cameras, and search light capability with an electronic chart system. It can verify alarms generated by an oil spill detection radar processor, and provide decision support information to tackle oil spills.
Aptomar says it is the first sensor to measure and position the relative thickness of an oil spill. In addition, it can be deployed for high-risk operations such as surveillance, search and rescue, firefighting and towing, helping to reduce the probability and consequence of an unintended incident.
Fafnir Offshore is a newly established company focused on the oil industry in the North Atlantic. It plans to build a fleet of specializedvessels suited to harsh conditions in Arctic waters.
Polarsysselis the first vessel of the Havyard 832 L WE (Wave Edition) design. It measures 88.5 x 17.6 m (290 x 57.8 ft), with a deadweight of 3,700 metric tons (4,078 tons) and cabin capacity for 30 people.
