HOUSTONPetrobras and Foro Energy have signed a technology cooperation agreement covering high-power laser drilling research and development with an aim to improve drilling performance in presalt reservoirs. The agreement sets the framework for collaborative research between Petrobras and Foro Energy over an initial three-year time period with the opportunity for extensions.

The agreement involves a program with the Leopoldo Americo Miguez de Mello Research & Development Center (CENPES) that will focus on developing a next-generation high-power laser drilling system that will have the potential to improve drilling performance by increasing the rate of penetration while using extremely low weight on bit and torque, thereby prolonging bit life and lowering drilling cost per foot.
