TOKYO – Construction has started of the gas export pipeline for the INPEX-operated Ichthys LNG project.

The 889-km (552-mi)pipeline will connect the onshore processing facilities at Bladin Point near Darwin to the Ichthys gas/condensate field in the Browse basin offshore Western Australia.

Saipem’s semisubmersible laybarge SEMAC-1has started work on the 164-km (102-mi) shallow-water installation, which is expected to take around 80 days to complete. Its duties include laying the first 18-km (11-mi) section of 42-in. diameter pipe through Darwin Harbor.

The barge will initially feed pipe to the project’s landfall site for a 3-km (1.8-mi) shore-pull.

Following completion of shallow-water laying, Saipem’s deepwater installation vesselCastorone, will lay the remaining 718 km (446 mi) of pipe to the Ichthys field.
