ULSAN, South Korea – Hyundai Heavy Industries has contracted Wärtsilä to supply inert gas and nitrogen generator systems for the spar platform under construction for Statoil’s Aasta Hansteen field in the Norwegian Sea.

The inert gas generator will be the first to incorporate titanium, which was selected because of its corrosion resistance properties in sea water.

It is designed to produce mainly carbon dioxide (CO2) to ensure a safe atmosphere in cargo tanks and pipelines, thereby minimizing the risk of explosion.

Wärtsilä’s other package will generate, or create, pure nitrogen gas for use in flushing of pipelines and sealing gas in compressors.
