ABERDEEN, UK – Wintershall has proven gas and condensate with two wells on the Solberg prospect in the Norwegian Sea.

The semisubmersibleBorgland Dolphin started drilling well 6407/1-7 in February to assess the lateral extent and size of last year’s Lower Cretaceous Rodriguez discovery. Targets were strong 3D seismic amplitudes thought to be associated with lateral improvement in reservoir quality and thickness.

The well intersected two sandstone intervals containing 12-m (39-ft) net pay of fluids similar to those encountered in the Rodriguez well. A subsequent downdip side track 6407/1-7A drilled to the northeast encountered two sandstone intervals with total net vertical thickness of 7 m (23 ft).

Faroe Petroleum said the result confirmed the play model and that 3D seismic amplitude can be used to identify pay in Lower Cretaceous sands in this area.

Although Solberg and Rodriguez form part of the same reservoir channel system, pressure measurements from their gas/condensate-filled channels reveal a small pressure difference, suggesting the wells may not be in communication. However, the reservoir channel systems all likely extend northward into the Milagro license.

Borgland Dolphin has P&A’d the well and now heads to license PL 550 in the northern North Sea to drill wildcat well  31/2-21 S for Tullow Oil Norge.
