HOUSTON – Weatherford Petroleum Consultants has previewed a new imaging technique that it says removes blind spots from wireline wellbore images.
Shown at the American Association of Petroleum Geologists Annual Convention and Exhibition, Reveal 360 reconstructs data not measured by wireline imaging tools. The technique starts by decomposing the measured sections of the borehole wall into sparse representations of the morphological components using dictionaries of multi-scale, multi-orientation transforms. This process is known as morphological component analysis.
These representations then are reconstructed using the dictionaries’ information to fill in the blind spots.
Weatherford said Reveal 360 gives unbiased, reproducible estimates of the unmeasured parts to enable automated pattern recognition algorithms.
“Gaps between the pads of wireline tools provide images in which 30% to 50% of the wellbore data is missing,” said Peter Elkington, Weatherford chief geoscientist – Geoscience Development. “With Reveal 360, our processing technique environmentally normalizes the image and then removes the gaps between pads, providing a complete view of your wellbore.”
