LONDON – Oil & Gas UK has released the second edition of its guidelines on Relief Well Planning for Offshore Wells on the UK continental shelf. It includes guidance for an expanded range of relief wells, including subsea wells.

The guidelines were developed by members of the association’s Well Life Cycle Practices Forum (WLCPF) and Britain’s Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC).

They refer to plans for relief wells that operators must prepare as part of the Oil Pollution Emergency Plan submitted to DECC for any offshore installation involved in oil and gas exploration and production. The guidelines draw on global industry experience to provide guidance on understanding well integrity issues.
