STOCKHOLM, Sweden – Lundin has discovered oil with the Ara-1 well offshore Peninsular Malaysia.

The jackupWest Courageous drilled the discovery well on block PM308A in 75 m (246 ft) of water to a TD of 4,030 m (13,222 ft). Ara-1 intersected nine thin oil-bearing sands in a high-pressured intra-rift section over a vertical interval of 800 m (2,624 ft).

It confirmed the extension of a new intra-rift oil play, proven by the Junglau-1 well in 2011, across a very large structural complex in the northeast area of the block below a major regional seal. However, Ara-1’s oil pay zones were thinner than the pre-drill expectation.

The well has been P&A’d. Lundin will incorporate the results into a recently extended regional 3D seismic dataset to identify areas where local sand reservoir sources might be better developed.

This was the rig’s final well for Lundin’s 2012 campaign in the area, and it will now be demobilized.
