PARIS – Total (Paris: FP FP) has confirmed an oil discovery at the Garantiana structure in the Norwegian North Sea, 30 km (18.6 mi) northeast of the Visund field.

The 34/6-2 S well, drilled by the semisubmersibleBorgland Dolphin in license PL 554 in 384 m (1,260 ft) of water, encountered oil in the lower Jurassic Cook formation with good reservoir quality. On test, the well flowed 4,300 b/d through a 28/64-in. choke, with a low gas-oil ratio.

Aside track (34/6-2 A) was then drilled to appraise the find by identifying the oil-water contact in the formation. The outcome was successful, confirming the extension of the discovery. Recoverable reserves appear to be in the range 25-75 MMbbl.

Development options are under review, ranging from a standalone field facility to a subsea tieback to a host field in the area. However, there are other prospects nearby, also under evaluation. A second exploration well will follow in 2013.

Total is operator, in partnership with Det norske oljeselskap, Bridge Energy, and Svenska Petroleum.

After P&A’ing the well,Borgland Dolphin will perform development drilling on the Oseberg field for Statoil Petroleum.
