STOCKHOLM, Sweden – Lundin Petroleum (NASDAQ:LUPE) has started drilling the Tiga Papan-5 well offshore Sabah, East Malaysia.

The well, drilled by theOffshore Courageous in 50 m (164 ft) water depth, targets mid-Miocene age sands of the Tiga Papan Unit previously tested in 1982. The Tiga Papan-1 discovery well flowed oil at a cumulative rate of 5,631 b/d.

A vertical well will test the un-appraised fault block east of Tiga Papan-1. The well could be side tracked into the same fault block as the discovery well to test a downdip extension of pay zones encountered there.

This is the first of five wells planned by Lundin Malaysia this year in the SB307 and SB308 blocks. Partners are Petronas Carigali and Nio Petroleum Sabah.
