Aramco, MIT extend research alliance

Saudi Aramco and Massachusetts Institute of Technology have signed a memorandum of understanding that provides a framework to expand the two organizations’ research and education partnership.

DHAHRAN, Saudi Arabia – Saudi Aramco and Massachusetts Institute of Technology have signed a memorandum of understanding that provides a framework to expand the two organizations’ research and education partnership.

Saudi Aramco has agreed to become a founding member of the MIT Energy Initiative (MITEI), raising its participation from its current sustaining membership. This will increase the scope of research collaboration to include energy efficiency; energy economics; CO2 management and conversion; desalination; advanced materials; computational reservoir modeling and simulation; geophysics; and unconventional gas.


MITEI founding members commit to a $5-million/yr program for five years. Saudi Aramco also plans to establish a satellite R&D center in Cambridge, Massachusetts, to enhance the research collaboration and facilitate exchange of researchers.
