TEL AVIV -- Noble Energy has started drilling the Leviathan prospect in the deepwater Levantine Basin offshore Israel.

The Sedco Express is drilling the Leviathan-1 well in the Rachel license, around 135 km (84 mi) west of Haifa, in a water depth of 1,634 m (5,631 ft).

According to partner Delek Drilling, Noble is planning to drill for three targets, with a final sub-surface depth of 7,200 m (23,622 ft).

The program should take five months to complete, after which the rig will transfer to the Tamar gas field for development drilling.
