Seatrium selects Veolia’s desalination technology for two Petrobras FPSOs

Sulphate removal units will help reduce environmental impact and optimize production, says Veolia.

Veolia says that it has secured a multi-million-dollar contract from Seatrium to provide advanced seawater desalination solutions for two FPSOs in one of Brazil’s largest offshore developments.

The water treatment solutions will be deployed on Petrobras’ P84 and P85 FPSOs. Each vessel will have the capacity to process 225,000 barrels of oil and 10 million cubic meters of gas daily, which will in turn require “sophisticated water management solutions” to minimize environmental impact, says Veolia.

Typically, oil and gas production depends upon treated, desalinated seawater being injected into reservoirs through sulphate removal units (SRUs). Veolia’s SRU system for water injection production features its ZeeWeed Ultrafiltration and SWSR Series Nanofiltration membranes, which Veolia says can process 1,960 cubic meters per hour of water per platform.

By removing harmful sulphates and other ions, Veolia says that this technology can help protect reservoirs and flowlines while reducing the environmental footprint of injection operations and ensuring optimal performance.

Veolia says that this latest collaboration represents the fifth contract between it and Seatrium, with three projects successfully delivered in the past three years.
