RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil  Petrobras has contracted Miros, via the latter’s local partner in Brazil, Belga Marine, to update its oil spill detection system.

The upgraded Miros equipment will undergo a cloud-based add-on to the monitoring software currently in use offshore Brazil, allowing data to be safely shared with multiple parties in real time. There will also be security enhancements to allow the system to be rolled out across various offshore facilities.

Petrobras opted for the changes following the introduction of new rules from regulator IBAMA, the Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources, concerning the integrity of OSD alarms and monitoring.

Its new guidelines are intended to ensure information or alarms from OSD systems offshore cannot be tampered with, allowing secure flow of information from the monitoring software between the operator and environmental authority.

Miros and Belga Marine will now work on modernizing the OSD system and simplifying access to offshore information so potential spills can be dealt with more quickly.
