OSLO, Norway – The Norwegian Petroleum Directorate (NPD) is supporting a pilot project that uses artificial intelligence (AI) to search for status reports on the Norwegian Continental Shelf.

The development, run by FabriqAI and Kadme, allows the user to ask questions about production licenses, areas, prospects, wells and discoveries from more than 600 reports covering work by companies on the shelf. The tool works in Norwegian and English.

“This is more than just a simple search; here you can chat with a digital personality that will try to understand the context of your questions and has access to enormous amounts of valuable information,” said Petter Dischington of the NPD. “Our focus is on accurate information and good source references, thus minimizing the risk of factual errors or so-called hallucinations, which has been an issue in many other AI products.”

The pilot will run until October. Various individuals at the NPD have supplied information for the project.

“The NPD is committed to using new technology that contributes to value creation from the petroleum industry. This project will provide valuable experience in using AI, while also utilizing the enormous potential that lies in the status reports,” said assistant director Arne Jacobsen in technology, analyses and coexistence.
