TEHRAN, IranPetrobras may assist Iran with development of the South Pars field oil layer in the Persian Gulf, according to a report by news service Shana.

This follows recent talks in Tehran between Brazil’s Minister of Mines and Energy, Fernando Coelho Filho, and Iran’s Minister of Petroleum, Bijan Zangeneh.

Zangeneh said Petrobras would send a delegation of managers to Iran to discuss development of the South Pars oil layer and cooperation in the Caspian Sea oil projects.

Petrobras had the required technology to develop the oil layer, an Iranian official added, although at present it lacked the financial resources to do so.

Earlier this yearMaersk Oil was involved in discussions on the oil layer, but Total’s subsequent decision to acquire Maersk has led to a conflict of interest, from Iran’s point of view, as Total has major interests in producing fields of neighboring Qatar.

The South Pars field extends across the median line into Qatari waters, where it is known as the North field.
