CAIRO, EgyptAquaterra Energy has supplied and installed a new Sea Swift platform at the Amal field in the Gulf of Suez offshore Egypt.

The client was PICO Petroleum Integrated Services, lead contractor for Amal Petroleum Co.’s (AMAPETCO) Amal field development.

The Sea Swift is aconductor supported platform (CSP) installed in 23 m (75 ft) of water, featuring a 385-metric ton (424-ton) topsides with a helideck and emergency accommodation and provision for six wells.

According to Aquaterra, the scope of work included designing the process, piping, electrical, instrumentation, control system and technical safety features, and design of the new subsea production pipelines to the Amal-A platform.

The project, which took 18 months from design to installation, also involved erecting a bridge link to the neighboring Amal-B platform and reconfiguring the topsides pipework to create a new and improved production profile.

Sea Swift is a modular system said to combine the advantages of a platform with the rig-run benefits of a subsea development. Various Sea Swift platforms are currently in operation in shallow-water locations in the Asia/Pacific and West Africa regions.

Benefits are said to include reduced platform costs, lower installation and intervention costs, and simplified project management. In addition, the designs allow for wells to be drilled, completed with dry trees, and installed before the arrival of the main processing platform.

AMAPETCO operates Amal on behalf of its shareholdersEgyptian General Petroleum Co. and Cheiron Amal Petroleum Corp.

Aquaterra expected the project to open new opportunities for cooperation with PICO both in Egypt and the Middle East.
