ROTTERDAM, the NetherlandsKotug International has supported Allseas with decommissioning of Shell’s Brent Delta platform topsides in the UK northern North Sea.

Mainly Kotug provided assistance to Allseas’ cargo bargeIron Lady during the initial transfer of the seafastened topsides from the Pioneering Spirit at a location offshore Hartlepool, northeast England, and the subsequent tow of the barge to Able UK’s decommissioning yard nearby in Teesside.

Kotug operated and oversaw four harbor tugs that took over theIron Lady in order to bring it under the Brent D topsides in the slot of the Pioneering Spirit.

The same tugs then towed theIron Lady, carrying the topsides, away from the slot and into the river Tees for the remaining part of the voyage to the decommissioning yard.

As the entrance channel to the yard is narrow and tidal restricted, Kotug and Allseas chose to deploy two Rotortugs and two ASD tugs to attain maximum redundancy and maneuverability in the tug configuration.

Kotug Tow Master Bas van Hoorn said: “The towage operations were carefully prepared in close cooperation with Allseas, with extensive calculations and risk assessments to determine the safest and most efficient towage plan for theIron Lady.”
